E 7A Rapid Prototyping
The U.S. Department of the Air Force has finalized a $2.56 billion price agreement with Boeing for the E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control rapid prototype program, which includes the delivery of two operationally representative prototype systems. Assistant Secretary Andrew Hunter highlighted the agreement as a crucial advancement for military capabilities, particularly in airborne moving target indication. The program aims to integrate U.S.-based mission systems into existing E-7 platforms, ensuring interoperability with allies already utilizing the E-7. Advanced features such as a multi-role electronically scanned array radar will enhance battle management and situational awareness. Until the E-7A is fully operational, the Air Force will continue to rely on the E-3 AWACS for command and control operations. The prototypes are expected to be delivered by FY28, with production decisions planned for FY26.
