The Oakland Roots soccer team has signed a $3 million lease to play their 2025 home games at the Oakland Coliseum, marking a return to Oakland after playing at Cal State East Bay due to turf issues. This agreement ensures professional sports will continue at the Coliseum following the Oakland A's departure. The Roots, along with their women's team the Oakland Soul, plan to build a 10,000-seat interim stadium at the Coliseum's Malibu Lot by 2026. The move provides Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao an opportunity to promote the city's sports scene amidst her political challenges. The Coliseum ownership is transitioning to the African American Sports and Entertainment Group, following its purchase from the City of Oakland and the A's. Team president Lindsay Barenz emphasized the importance of the move and highlighted the growing community pride in the Roots.
