Man Sentenced for Attempted Murder of Lee Jae-myung
A South Korean court sentenced a 67-year-old man, identified only by his surname Kim, to 15 years in prison for the attempted murder of opposition leader Lee Jae-myung. Kim stabbed Lee in the neck during a public event in Busan in January, reportedly to prevent him from becoming president. The court found Kim guilty of attempted murder and violating election law, describing the attack as a grave challenge to the country's democratic principles. The incident occurred ahead of the April parliamentary elections, where Lee's Democratic Party secured a significant victory over the ruling conservative party. Both the defendant and prosecutors have one week to appeal the sentence. Lee, who recovered after surgery, resigned as party chairman in June but is expected to seek re-election in August.
