Liberty Mutual Ends CA Fire Policies Over Tech Issues

Liberty Mutual Fire Insurance Company is discontinuing fire insurance policies for approximately 17,000 California homeowners due to retiring 'antiquated' technology systems, making it unfeasible to support such products in the state. This non-renewal, affecting policies from September through November, is part of a broader technology overhaul also impacting policyholders in other states. The decision is particularly impactful in California, which has faced over 5,588 wildfires burning 832,337 acres this year alone. While Liberty Mutual will continue offering fire insurance through its Safeco brand, the move underscores the broader trend of insurers reducing coverage in the state due to increasing risks and regulatory constraints on premium hikes. The non-renewals represent about 1% of Liberty Mutual's total personal insurance policies in California and less than 2% of the state's fire insurance market.
