Whale sighting in Massachusetts
In 2024, a record number of over 300 individual humpback whales were identified in Bermuda waters, significantly surpassing the previous total achieved over 40 years, according to researcher Andrew Stevenson. Meanwhile, multiple great white sharks have been spotted off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, raising awareness among beachgoers about the growing shark population in the area. An aerial survey by Fisheries and Oceans Canada is underway to estimate the beluga whale population in James Bay and eastern Hudson Bay, marking the ninth survey of its kind since 1985. In the Philippines, whale shark sightings in Donsol surged to 90 this year, a notable rebound from previous years' declines. Additionally, warming waters along the Atlantic coast have led to closer sightings of whales as they follow bait into shallower waters. These developments highlight ongoing changes in marine mammal populations and their habitats.
