Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly met in Beijing to discuss the normalization of relations between the two countries, aiming to establish a strategic partnership. The meeting follows strained ties caused by incidents like the arrest of Huawei's CFO in Canada and subsequent detentions. Both sides emphasized the importance of mutual respect, shelving differences while seeking common ground, and enhancing cooperation in various areas like trade, tourism, and climate change. China stressed that issues like Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Hong Kong are internal matters not open to external interference, urging Canada to follow the one-China policy. Both nations acknowledged the lack of fundamental conflicts of interest and the need to reflect on past difficulties to promote stable and beneficial bilateral relations.
