Pioneering Literacy Advocate Ruth Colvin Dies at 107
Ruth Johnson Colvin, the founder of Literacy Volunteers of America and a pioneer in adult literacy education, passed away at 107 in her Syracuse home. Colvin was inspired to combat illiteracy after discovering that 11,500 residents in her area were functionally illiterate, leading her to establish the organization in 1962 from her basement. Her efforts transformed into ProLiteracy, an international literacy organization that continues to thrive today. Throughout her life, Colvin taught literacy programs in 62 countries and was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. She remained active in literacy initiatives until her death, reflecting her lifelong commitment to education as a fundamental right. Colvin's legacy includes numerous accolades and a significant impact on literacy education worldwide.
