Earthquake in Japan
A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Japan near Miyazaki Prefecture, occurring at 4:43 PM local time and prompting tsunami warnings along the coastline. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that tsunami waves up to 50 centimeters were detected, particularly affecting coastal areas like Nichinan and Miyazaki, although no significant damage from the tsunami has been recorded. Nine minor injuries were reported, primarily in Miyazaki and Kagoshima, with local train services temporarily suspended due to damage assessments. JMA issued a rare 'mega earthquake alert' and warned of an increased likelihood of future seismic activity in the region, particularly concerning the Nankai Trough, which has a historical tendency for destructive earthquakes. Authorities are maintaining vigilance, urging residents to review earthquake preparedness plans as there is a 70-80% probability of a major quake from the Nankai Trough in the next three decades. Fortunately, all nuclear facilities in the affected areas have been deemed safe following inspections.
