California lawmakers have passed a suite of bills aimed at regulating artificial intelligence, including measures to combat deepfakes and protect workers from exploitation. Notably, the legislation bans the use of deepfakes in election-related content and requires social media platforms to remove such material 120 days before and 60 days after Election Day. Additionally, a new law criminalizes the generation of AI-created child sexual abuse material, addressing gaps in current prosecution capabilities. Other provisions mandate tech companies to provide AI detection tools to users and require transparency from developers regarding the data used for training AI models. The bills also include protections for workers from being replaced by AI, particularly in creative fields, and aim to integrate AI literacy into educational curricula. Governor Gavin Newsom has until September 30 to act on these proposals, which reflect growing concerns over the ethical implications of AI technology.
