Mullaperiyar dam safety
In Karnataka, authorities are urgently working to repair a washed-away crest gate at the Tungabhadra dam, which has caused significant water release and raised safety concerns. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the formation of an expert committee to assess the condition of all dams in the state, emphasizing that repairs are expected to take four to five days and that farmers need not panic. He acknowledged the rarity of such an incident in 70 years and stated that immediate actions have been taken to minimize the impact, including water release strategies. Concurrently, the Kerala government reassured the public about the safety of the Mullaperiyar dam, despite rising fears and recent landslides in the region. Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine confirmed no immediate structural concerns but highlighted the need to curb misinformation about dam safety. Both states are grappling with dam safety issues amidst political scrutiny and public anxiety over water management.
