Instead, Canelo is set to defend his remaining WBA, WBC, and WBO titles against undefeated Edgar Berlanga on September 14 in Las Vegas. The IBF's decision to strip Alvarez was made to facilitate a title match between Scull and Vladimir Shiskin for the vacant belt. Alvarez, who has held all four super-middleweight titles since defeating Caleb Plant in 2021, expressed excitement about the upcoming fight, emphasizing the significance of the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry. Berlanga, eager to make an impact, stated this is his opportunity to prove himself against Alvarez. Despite losing the IBF title, Alvarez remains a prominent figure in boxing with a career record of 61-2-2.
