Daniel Wiffen Wins 800m Freestyle Gold
Daniel Wiffen has become the first Northern Irish athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in 36 years, triumphing in the 800m freestyle with a new Olympic record of 7:38.19 at the Paris 2024 Olympics. His victory marks a remarkable journey from finishing fourth in previous championships to dominating the event with a dramatic final burst, supported by his twin brother Nathan. Wiffen's win was celebrated as a historic moment for Irish swimming, adding to Ireland's tally which includes a bronze from Mona McSharry in the 100m breaststroke. Despite intense competition from Bobby Finke of the USA and Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri, Wiffen's determination and strategy led him to victory. He aims to continue his success in the 1500m freestyle later in the Games.
