Widespread Scams Targeting Vulnerable Individuals
A Mumbai homemaker, Shilpa Chaurasiya, was scammed out of Rs 2.1 lakhs by individuals posing as a doctor and his aides, promising a non-surgical knee pain treatment, only for the clinic to be nonexistent. In California, residents are warned about voter registration scams via text messages, and urged to verify their status directly through official channels. Similarly, phone scams are reported in Jackson County, Kansas, where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officers, and in Coconut Creek, Florida, where scammers clone police phone numbers to appear legitimate. Additionally, the IRS cautions taxpayers about identity thieves posing as IRS agents through calls, emails, and social media, advising that the IRS will always mail a notice first.
