American Student Found Dead on Table Mountain

Brook Cheuvront, a 20-year-old student from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was found dead after going missing during a hike on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Cheuvront, who was interning at the University of Cape Town, disappeared on Saturday when her tracking app stopped updating, prompting a search by rangers and rescue teams. Her body was located the next day by an aircraft. The cause of death remains unclear and an investigation is ongoing. Cheuvront was a Morehead-Cain Scholar and the 2022 valedictorian of Avery County High School. Authorities have advised hikers to travel in groups to enhance safety.
