Buttigieg Launches $378 Million Maryland Parkway Project

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced the groundbreaking of the $378 million Maryland Parkway Bus Rapid Transit project aimed at improving public transit in Southern Nevada. The project, which will span 12.5 miles and is expected to be completed by 2026, includes enhancements such as dedicated bus-bike lanes, improved transit shelters, and the introduction of 15 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. Buttigieg emphasized the importance of investing in underserved communities, noting that approximately 32% of households along the corridor lack access to a vehicle. The initiative is designed to reduce wait times and congestion, ultimately benefiting both transit riders and drivers. Local officials welcomed the federal funding of nearly $150 million allocated earlier this year to support the project, citing it as a vital step towards enhancing transportation infrastructure in Las Vegas. However, construction is anticipated to cause traffic disruptions over the next two years.
