India to Implement GNSS for Toll Collection

India is set to replace its existing FASTag toll collection system with an advanced Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which is currently undergoing testing on major highways. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that GNSS will offer real-time vehicle tracking and automatically calculate tolls based on the distance traveled, ensuring motorists only pay for what they use. This transition aims to eliminate traditional toll booths, reduce congestion, and enhance the overall travel experience, addressing limitations seen in the FASTag system. The GNSS technology promises a more efficient, accurate, and seamless toll collection process. Although a rollout timeline has not been officially confirmed, the initiative marks a significant modernization of India's highway infrastructure and aims to alleviate common toll-related issues. Government officials are closely monitoring the GNSS trials on the Bengaluru-Mysore and Panipat-Hisar highways, identifying potential challenges before full implementation.
