Fort Lauderdale Police Officer John Giga is facing calls for termination after an internal investigation revealed he used racial slurs and instigated a fight with Black men while off duty the morning after Thanksgiving 2023. The NAACP and Broward Public Defender's Office are advocating for Giga’s dismissal, citing his history of misconduct and the severity of this incident. Surveillance footage showed Giga drinking heavily at a bar before the altercation. Despite Giga's claims that he was attacked, evidence suggests he was the aggressor. Acting City Manager Susan Grant is currently reviewing the police chief's recommendation for Giga's termination. Giga remains on administrative leave with pay pending the final decision.
