U.S. Army Completes Gaza Aid Mission Review
The U.S. Army's 7th Transportation Brigade faced significant challenges while executing the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) project to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Over four months, the mission successfully transported over 20 million tons of essential supplies, despite obstacles including turbulent weather and security threats. Col. Sam Miller, the project's commander, described it as the biggest 'organizational leadership challenge' of his career. Following the mission's conclusion on July 17, the Army is conducting a review of the $230 million operation to identify lessons learned, particularly regarding training under adverse conditions. A recent USAID inspector general report highlighted concerns raised by staff about the project's feasibility and its potential to hinder negotiations for more efficient land crossings for aid. The initiative was launched after President Biden's March announcement, aiming to assist approximately 500,000 people monthly during a critical humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
