Ecuador Government Seeks Extension on Yasuni Oil Ban
A year after Ecuador's historic referendum to halt oil drilling in Yasuni National Park, Indigenous leaders express frustration over the government's lack of action and its request for a five-year extension for state-run Petroecuador to cease operations. Nearly 60% of voters supported the referendum, aimed at protecting one of the world's most biodiverse regions, but oil production continues unabated, with significant infrastructure still in place. Waorani leader Juan Bay criticized the government for failing to comply with the court's order to dismantle drilling operations, stating there has been no political will to uphold the referendum's decision. The government claims it is developing an 'exit plan' but faces challenges due to the economic reliance on oil revenue, which constitutes nearly a third of Ecuador's GDP. Experts argue that a year may not have been sufficient for such a complex transition, especially in light of the country’s rising violence and economic struggles. As the deadline approaches, the tension between environmental protection and economic necessity intensifies.
