Ilhan Omar Wins Primary with 56.2% of Vote

Rep. Ilhan Omar decisively won her primary race in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District against former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, securing 56.2% of the vote to Samuels' 42.9%. Omar, a member of the progressive 'Squad' and known critic of Israel's actions in Gaza, emphasized themes of joy in fighting for social justice during her victory speech. Despite facing criticism for her stance on Israel, Omar received financial and grassroots support that outmatched Samuels'. Samuels criticized Omar for being divisive and highlighted public safety concerns in Minneapolis, but failed to gain enough traction. Omar will now face Republican Dalia Al-Aqidi in the general election. This victory comes as other Squad members, Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, lost their primaries to more centrist candidates supported by pro-Israel groups.
