Five Die from West Nile Virus in Spain
The West Nile virus has claimed five lives in the Seville region of Spain since the beginning of the year, with two recent deaths reported in Coria del Rio. Among the victims were an 86-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man, with family members expressing concerns over the lack of mosquito control measures in their neighborhoods. The Junta de Andalucia reported ten new cases of the virus, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the region to forty this year. Symptoms of the virus can include fever and body aches, and while most infected individuals remain asymptomatic, severe cases can lead to meningitis or brain damage. Meanwhile, West Nile virus activity has been detected in various communities in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, although no human infections have been reported there so far. Authorities in both regions are considering increased mosquito control measures in response to the rising threat of the virus.
