Tripura Rights Panel Addresses Ethnic Violence

The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has expressed alarm over recent ethnic violence in Ganda Twisa, prompting it to serve notices to the Director General of Police (DGP) and the District Magistrate (DM) of Dhalai district. Reports indicate large-scale violence, arson, and looting occurred on July 12, yet no police cases have been registered and no arrests made, shocking the THRC. The panel has demanded a preliminary report within three weeks detailing actions taken by law enforcement and the number of affected families and properties. THRC chairperson SC Das emphasized the need for prompt action from the administration to uphold human rights and maintain public safety, asserting that such violence undermines democratic values. Victim families have reportedly been left vulnerable and terrorized, with some seeking refuge in nearby forests. The THRC's actions highlight a growing concern over the effectiveness of local authorities in addressing civil unrest and protecting citizens' rights.
