Over 140 Treated for Heat Illness at Airshow
The Pikes Peak Regional Airshow in Colorado experienced extreme heat over the weekend, leading to over 140 attendees being treated for heat-related illnesses, with 11 individuals hospitalized. Fire officials initially reported about 100 cases, but this number increased as the event progressed, prompting a response labeled as a 'mass casualty' incident due to the volume of cases. Despite the challenging conditions, Colorado Springs Fire Chief Randy Royal praised the quick actions of event organizers and emergency services in preventing serious injuries. Attendees faced difficulties accessing water, with vendors running out of supplies and complaints about high prices for bottled water. Organizers implemented additional precautions on the second day, including extra medical personnel and water stations to ensure attendee safety amid continuing high temperatures. The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory, warning of temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, urging attendees to stay hydrated and prepared for the heat.
