Federal Judge Blocks Ohio Law on Foreign Contributions
A federal judge, Michael Watson, has blocked an Ohio law that aimed to prohibit foreign nationals and green card holders from contributing to state ballot campaigns, ruling that it infringes on their First Amendment rights. While acknowledging the state's interest in preventing foreign influence, Watson emphasized that lawful permanent residents (LPRs) are trusted to serve in the military and should therefore be allowed to express political views through financial contributions. The law, signed by Republican Governor Mike DeWine, was criticized for potentially criminalizing the political speech of noncitizens, who would face significant penalties for violations. Watson pointed out that the law fails to address contributions from foreign companies while unjustly targeting individuals who reside legally in the U.S. This decision reflects a broader legal interpretation that upholds the political rights of LPRs, aligning with constitutional protections for free speech. The ruling comes as Ohio lawmakers grapple with electoral reforms following previous election-related setbacks.
