Survey Finds American Dream Slipping Away
A recent Wall Street Journal/NORC poll reveals that only about a third of Americans believe the traditional American dream—homeownership, family, and a comfortable retirement—is still attainable. The survey, which included 1,502 U.S. adults, indicates a significant disconnect between aspirations and reality, particularly among younger generations burdened by high interest rates and student loans. While 89% consider owning a home essential, only 10% feel it is easy to achieve, and similarly, only 9% believe financial security is attainable despite 96% deeming it essential. This decline in optimism starkly contrasts with sentiments from a similar poll conducted twelve years ago, where more than half believed the American dream still held true. Personal anecdotes highlight the struggles faced by many, with individuals postponing major life decisions due to financial constraints. Overall, key aspects of the American dream appear increasingly out of reach for many Americans today.
