Migrants dead in Italy
A tragic migrant boat accident off the eastern coast of Sicily resulted in the deaths of two individuals, with another person still missing. The Italian coast guard received a distress call on Saturday evening from a vessel approximately 17 miles southeast of Syracuse carrying migrants from Syria, Egypt, and Bangladesh. Rescue operations led to the recovery of 34 people, but unfortunately, one migrant died upon arrival at the port and another later in the hospital. The boat sank during the rescue efforts, prompting ongoing search operations for the missing individual. This incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the central Mediterranean, where over 23,500 have died or gone missing since 2014. The coast guard is investigating the circumstances surrounding how the migrants ended up in the water.
