Raj Kapoor's Awara to Premiere at TIFF

The 4K restored version of Raj Kapoor's 1951 classic 'Awara' will premiere at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 13, 2024, celebrating the filmmaker's centenary. This restoration, part of the National Film Heritage Mission and funded by India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, features enhanced color grading overseen by Kunal Kapoor. 'Awara', which tells the story of a young man’s struggle against societal pressures, was previously nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes and is regarded as a significant work in Indian cinema. TIFF's programming director highlighted the film's international acclaim and cultural impact, making it a fitting addition to their Classics showcase. This screening marks a continuation of TIFF's recognition of influential international filmmakers, following a major retrospective of Kapoor's work in 2011. Movie enthusiasts will experience this cinematic milestone during the festival, which runs from September 5 to September 15.
