Japan requests extradition
Japan has formally requested the extradition of Paul Watson, the founder of the anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd, who has been detained in Greenland since July 21. Watson faces charges in Japan for allegedly breaking into a Japanese vessel in the Antarctic Ocean in 2010, causing injury and property damage. His lawyer has argued that Japan's justice system is untrustworthy and urged Denmark to deny the extradition request. The Danish Ministry of Justice will ultimately decide on the extradition, with the case also needing to be examined by Greenlandic authorities. Watson's detention has drawn international attention, with his family appealing to Denmark's monarchy for his release. The outcome remains uncertain as Denmark has not yet responded to Japan's extradition request.
