A helicopter crashed into the roof of the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel in Cairns, Queensland, shortly before 2am, resulting in the death of the pilot, who was the only occupant of the aircraft. Hundreds of guests were evacuated as a fire erupted from the crash, with two rotor blades landing in the hotel pool and on the Esplanade. While no serious injuries were reported among guests, two people, including an elderly man and woman, were hospitalized in stable condition. Eyewitnesses described the helicopter flying low and fast before the collision, with sounds likened to a bomb explosion. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident, which has been classified as an unauthorized flight by the charter company. Police have declared a Public Safety Preservation Act and closed off surrounding streets for safety.
