Tatjana Smith Announces Retirement After Silver Win
At the Paris Olympics, South African swimmer Tatjana Smith, who announced her retirement, earned a silver in the 200m breaststroke, adding to her gold in the 100m breaststroke, and tying Chad Le Clos as South Africa's most decorated Olympian. The U.S. swimmer Kate Douglass won the 200m breaststroke, narrowly beating Tatjana Smith, and Tes Schouten of the Netherlands took bronze. This victory brings Smith's total Olympic medal count to four. Earlier in the week, Smith had already claimed gold in the 100m breaststroke, successfully defending her title from the Tokyo Olympics. South Africa leads Africa's medal table with four medals. Egypt's Mohamed Elsayed and Tunisia's Fares Ferjani also contributed to the continent's tally with medals in fencing.
