Bob Good loses primary

Virginia state Sen. John McGuire has officially defeated incumbent Rep. Bob Good in a recount of the Republican primary for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, winning by a margin of 370 votes after an initial lead of 374. Good, who chaired the House Freedom Caucus, became the first sitting House Republican to lose a primary challenge this election cycle. The recount was triggered due to the narrow victory margin of less than 1 percent, and it cost Good approximately $96,500 to contest. McGuire, a former Navy SEAL and Trump-endorsed candidate, is set to face Democrat Gloria Witt in the upcoming November election. Good's loss marks a significant shift within the GOP, as it reflects internal divisions, particularly after he initially supported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over Trump. Despite switching his endorsement back to Trump, it was not enough to salvage his position, underscoring the influence of Trump's backing in Republican primaries.
