Smith, who took charge in 2021 and led the team to a Championship title and promotion to the Women's Super League, cited the need to explore new opportunities as her reason for leaving. Despite signing a three-year contract in August 2023, the club's relegation last season and significant player departures have contributed to a tumultuous environment. Interim head coach Loren Dykes will take over as the club searches for a permanent replacement. Bristol City chairman Gavin Marshall expressed gratitude for Smith's contributions, highlighting her commitment to the team. The season opener is scheduled for September 8 against Southampton.
