A luxury cruise ship, Insignia, rescued 68 migrants from a drifting fishing boat 440 nautical miles south of Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands. The migrants, from sub-Saharan Africa, were stranded at sea, resulting in six fatalities, with the Insignia recovering three bodies despite challenging weather conditions. The rescued individuals were provided with medical assistance, food, and shelter aboard the ship. Spain’s Interior Ministry has reported a drastic increase in migrant arrivals by sea this year, with the Canary Islands being a primary entry point. The Insignia, on a 180-day world cruise, coordinated with Spanish authorities for further assistance to the migrants.
