Cholera Outbreak in Sudan Kills 28

Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak for the second consecutive year, with at least 28 deaths and 658 recorded cases since July 22, 2024. The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted that the outbreak is exacerbated by ongoing conflict, poor hygiene in IDP camps, and flooding, leading to a 4.3% death rate, significantly higher than in previous outbreaks. Approximately 200,000 individuals are at high risk of contracting the disease as the country's health infrastructure remains severely compromised due to war. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has displaced over 10 million people, complicating aid delivery amidst five concurrent disease outbreaks, including dengue and measles. WHO officials stress the necessity for unhindered access to affected areas and adequate funding, noting that only 42.7% of the US$178 million needed for health responses has been secured. The current outbreak is primarily concentrated in Kassala and Gedaref states, which host a substantial number of displaced individuals.
