Hurricane Beryl Hits Texas, Causes Major Damage
Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 storm near Matagorda, Texas, on July 8, 2024, causing significant damage and power outages. Two Houston residents died when trees fell on their homes during the storm. Beryl, initially a Category 5 hurricane, has been responsible for 11 deaths across the Caribbean and the U.S. It prompted the closure of major oil ports and flight cancellations, with winds up to 80 mph and heavy rainfall resulting in flash floods. Acting Governor Dan Patrick declared state emergencies in 121 counties, with additional tornado warnings issued. The storm is expected to weaken to a tropical depression soon.
