Despite a current lull in tropical activity, meteorologists are forecasting an increase in storms as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season progresses. The dry air and Saharan dust that have suppressed storm formation are expected to dissipate, potentially leading to a surge in tropical storms and hurricanes starting in late August and continuing through September. AccuWeather predicts six to ten named storms in September alone, reminiscent of the record-breaking 2020 season. Tropical waves moving westward from Africa and extremely warm water temperatures are contributing to the heightened forecast. Regions at higher risk include the Texas Coast, Florida, and the Carolinas, with impacts possibly extending inland. The National Weather Service and other experts urge preparedness as the peak of the hurricane season approaches.
