Tim Burton Explains Beetlejuice Sequel Cast Changes

Tim Burton has confirmed that Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis will not return for the sequel to his 1988 classic, Beetlejuice, titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Burton explained that he wanted to take the story in a new direction, focusing on the dynamics among three generations of Deetz women: Delia (Catherine O'Hara), Lydia (Winona Ryder), and newcomer Astrid (Jenna Ortega). He stated he did not want to simply 'tick boxes' by including every original cast member, even though Baldwin and Davis were integral to the original film. The sequel will address their absence by revealing that the Maitlands found a 'loophole' allowing them to escape their haunting situation. Davis humorously noted that since her character is a ghost, it wouldn't make sense for her to appear older in the sequel. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to premiere in theaters on September 6.
