The city of Los Angeles will pay $9.5 million to settle a lawsuit with the family of Melyda Corado, a Trader Joe's assistant manager mistakenly shot and killed by LAPD officers during a pursuit in 2018. The settlement, approved by the Los Angeles City Council, is the largest pre-trial payout in a LAPD shooting case. Corado's family had sued the city and the officers involved, alleging civil rights violations and wrongful death. The family's attorneys emphasized that Mely's death was preventable if the officers had followed their training. Despite the settlement, the Los Angeles Police Commission determined that the officer who fired the fatal shot did not violate department policy. The Corado family hopes this settlement will prompt law enforcement to exercise greater caution when using deadly force.
