Renault engine rethink
Renault's staff at the Viry-Chatillon factory have expressed strong opposition to the company's plans to cease production of its own Formula 1 engines in favor of purchasing engines from Mercedes. The Social and Economic Council of Alpine employees has condemned this potential change, labeling it a 'betrayal' of the brand's heritage and a significant cost-cutting measure, shifting from a $120 million development expense to a $17 million supply cost. They argue that the 2026 engine project is promising and worthy of continuation. Renault CEO Luca De Meo is under fire for this decision, with employees questioning the rationale behind dismantling a facility that has been integral to F1 since 1977. A final decision on the matter is expected by September 30, as the company considers the future direction of its F1 program and personnel.
