Japanese startup Helical Fusion plans to launch the world's first steady-state nuclear fusion reactor by 2034, aiming to start commercial operations in the 2040s. The reactor is designed to generate 50-100 megawatts and could significantly enhance Japan's energy security by allowing the country to produce and potentially export its own energy. Helical Fusion's CEO, Takaya Taguchi, noted that despite decades of research into fusion technology, no commercially viable reactor has been developed yet. The company is leveraging Japan's investment of 400 billion yen ($2.8 billion) in fusion research and requires an additional 1 trillion yen to build the pilot reactor. While the ambitious project promises cleaner energy with minimal waste, it faces substantial technical and regulatory challenges. If successful, this initiative could revolutionize energy production and contribute to global sustainability efforts.
