Williams Benched for Hall of Fame Game
Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, along with all other starters, will not play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Houston Texans, as announced by head coach Matt Eberflus. Eberflus explained that the team has had ample padded practices and additional preseason games to prepare, making it unnecessary to risk starters in this extra game. Second-year quarterback Tyson Bagent will start the game, providing an opportunity for backup players to showcase their skills. Williams, the No. 1 overall draft pick, is expected to get between 45 and 60 snaps in the preseason, but his debut may be delayed until the Aug. 10 game against Buffalo. Eberflus emphasized the importance of practice reps and joint sessions with other teams in preparing for the regular season. Former Bears wide receiver Victor Cruz supported this decision, advocating for protecting Williams from early-season injuries.
