Xherdan Shaqiri has officially parted ways with Chicago Fire FC after two years, concluding a tenure marked by underwhelming performance relative to his $7.5 million transfer fee from Lyon. The 32-year-old midfielder, who was a Designated Player and top earner in MLS upon his arrival, recorded 16 goals and 20 assists in 75 matches but struggled to meet expectations as the team failed to reach the playoffs in both 2022 and 2023. Sporting director Georg Heitz stated that the mutual decision to terminate the contract was in the best interest of all parties involved, and Shaqiri expressed gratitude towards the club and its fans. He now seeks to explore new opportunities in his career as a free agent.
