Hawaii Prepares for Hurricane Gilma and Storms
As of August 26, Hawaii is bracing for impacts from Tropical Storm Hone, which has already caused significant rainfall and power outages on the Big Island, with totals reaching over 27 inches. Meanwhile, Hurricane Gilma, currently about 1,260 miles east of Hilo, is expected to approach the central Pacific while gradually weakening, though it will remain a hurricane for the foreseeable future. Tropical Storm Hector poses an additional threat, potentially strengthening as it moves toward the southern tip of Baja California. The National Hurricane Center has noted that unprecedented tropical cyclone activity could affect Hawaii this August. Emergency preparations are underway as heavy rains and strong winds raise concerns for flash flooding and mudslides, while reducing wildfire risks that plagued the region last year. The storms represent a significant challenge for the islands as they navigate through the peak of hurricane season.
