Alabama lawmaker sentenced
John Rogers, the longest-serving member of the Alabama House of Representatives, was sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for his involvement in a kickback scheme that misappropriated public funds intended for community projects. The 83-year-old Democrat from Birmingham directed approximately $400,000 to a youth baseball league run by fellow lawmaker Fred Plump, who then funneled about $200,000 back to Rogers and his associate, Varrie Johnson Kindall. Initially, Rogers had a plea agreement that proposed a 14-month home confinement sentence, but this was rescinded after he disputed his involvement in the scheme. Alongside Rogers, Plump received a 12-month sentence, while Kindall was sentenced to three years on related charges. The court emphasized the message sent to future lawmakers regarding accountability and integrity in office. Rogers is also required to repay nearly $200,000 to the Jefferson County Community Service Fund.
