New Zealand Ends 30-Year Gene Technology Ban

The New Zealand Government plans to end its nearly 30-year ban on gene technology outside laboratory settings, with legislation expected to be introduced to Parliament by the end of the year. Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Judith Collins emphasized that this reform will modernize gene technology laws, enhancing health outcomes, addressing climate change, and driving economic growth. The changes aim to align New Zealand's regulations with those of countries like Australia and Canada, allowing for easier development and commercialization of gene technologies. The new legislation will exempt low-risk gene editing from strict regulations and introduce a dedicated regulator to oversee the industry. Collins stated that the existing rules have hindered research and development, causing New Zealand to lag behind its global counterparts. The government aims to have the new laws passed and the regulator operational by the end of 2025.
