Canada Women’s Soccer Penalized for Spying Scandal
FIFA has imposed severe sanctions on the Canadian women's national soccer team due to a drone spying scandal during the Paris 2024 Olympics. The team has been deducted six points and fined approximately $313,000 CAD, while head coach Bev Priestman, along with officials Joseph Lombardi and Jasmine Mander, have been banned from all soccer-related activities for one year. This decision significantly hampers Canada's chances of advancing in the tournament, requiring them to win against both France and Colombia. FIFA stated that the Canadian Soccer Association failed to ensure compliance with regulations prohibiting drone usage over training sites, which constitutes a violation of fair play principles. Canadian soccer legend Christine Sinclair expressed her dismay, clarifying that the players were unaware of the spying tactics. The Canadian Soccer Association is reviewing the situation and may appeal FIFA's decision.
