Melissa Gilbert Reveals Misophonia Struggle and Advocacy

Melissa Gilbert, known for her role in 'Little House on the Prairie,' has revealed her struggle with misophonia, a neurological disorder characterized by intense emotional reactions to specific sounds. Gilbert experienced severe discomfort and guilt from sounds like chewing and tapping during her childhood, which worsened with age. Misophonia, which triggers fight-or-flight responses, is not officially recognized as a distinct disorder but has gained acknowledgment from some medical experts. Gilbert only discovered the name for her condition in adulthood and felt immense relief upon diagnosis. She now collaborates with the Duke Center for Misophonia and Emotional Regulation to raise awareness and has undergone cognitive behavioral therapy to manage her symptoms. Despite the challenges, Gilbert aims to educate others about this isolating condition.
