CJI on district judiciary
Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized that the district judiciary is the 'backbone of the judiciary' and called for an end to its designation as subordinate, reflecting a colonial mindset that should be discarded 75 years after independence. Speaking at the 'National Conference of the District Judiciary', he highlighted the district judiciary's vital role as the first and often final contact for citizens seeking justice. He pointed out that many citizens face barriers such as lack of legal representation and geographical difficulties in accessing courts. The CJI also addressed the importance of the quality of judicial work and the mental health of judges, noting the growing presence of women in the district judiciary. With recent advancements in judicial technology, over 46 crore pages of court records have been digitized, enhancing accessibility for citizens. Chandrachud’s remarks underscore the need for the judicial system to reflect accountability and confidence among the public.
