Haitian Police Use Tear Gas on Protesters
In Nigeria, widespread protests against President Bola Tinubu's economic policies unfolded on August 1, leading to clashes with security forces using tear gas and lethal force against demonstrators. Protesters demanded the reinstatement of petrol subsidies and urgent action to address soaring food prices and economic hardship. Meanwhile, in Haiti, police also deployed tear gas against peaceful protesters in the Solino neighborhood, who were voicing concerns over rampant gang violence and inadequate government response. Despite the arrival of international support, such as Kenyan police, many Haitians feel abandoned as gangs control 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Both protests reflect a growing frustration with governmental inaction amidst worsening socio-economic conditions. Amnesty International has called for accountability for security personnel involved in violent crackdowns on demonstrators in Nigeria.
