Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy Limited (SWREL) has secured a landmark contract to build a 1,000 MWhr standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) plant in Rajasthan, India, marking the largest of its kind in the country and one of the few GWh-scale projects globally. The project is set to be completed by 2025 and is part of a broader initiative to meet India's projected energy storage capacity requirement of 82.37 GWh by 2026-27, as outlined in the National Electricity Plan (NEP) 2023. In addition to the BESS project, SWREL has also obtained a 20 MW floating solar project in Karnataka, enhancing its renewable energy portfolio. Amit Jain, CEO of SWREL, emphasized the company's in-house capabilities and strategic positioning in the rapidly expanding solar and storage market. With the current BESS capacity in India at approximately 219 MWhr, this project significantly contributes to the country's renewable energy landscape. The total value of these projects amounts to Rs 328 crore, showcasing SWREL's growing influence in the sector.
